
Dr. Tumi Hawkins
Former Ward member for Caldecote, Former Lead Cabinet Member , Planning Policy, Dev Management & Building Control
Dr. Tumi Hawkins is a community activist, recently retired elected councillor at South Cambridgeshire District Council.
Tumi is a long-serving experienced District Councillor, first elected in May 2010, as the Liberal Democrat Councillor for Caldecote Ward and subsequently re-elected in 2014, 2018 and 2022. She was the council’s Cabinet Member for Planning & Building Control from 2018 with responsibility for the multi-award winning Great Cambridge Shared Planning Service (joint service of South Cambs and Cambridge City). The service recently won the Planning Award for Planning for the Natural Environment, RTPI planning authority of the year 2025 award, the Thornton Education Trust Local Planning Authority for Youth Engagement, and Highly Commended for the Local Authorities Searches Team of the Year 2026 award.
She is a Member Peer working with LGA (Local Government Association) and PAS (Planning Advisory Service) to share skills and experience especially in planning to support other councillors. She is also a Trustee of The Cambridge Room (of Urban Room network), fulfilling a passion to help educate and widen participation of local communities and businesses in planning process in Greater Cambridge.
Tumi recently retired from local politics and did not stand for May elections but continues to be active in Planning and Community Engagement.
